2015 Mere rd, hawke's bay, syrah

Hand picked, 100% whole bunch fermented, unfined.

It was thought that the first growers to plant Syrah in Hawke’s Bay had rocks in their heads.

But it wasn’t the rocks in their heads; it was the rock laden soils of the Mere Road vicinity that proved particularly well suited to ripening Syrah. Deep layers of greywacke stones and the resulting free draining soils temper the weed that is Syrah. Yes; weed. It grows like a triffid in less favoured sites. Here in Mere Road, moderate vigour translates to ripe fruit.

But here’s the trick; Hawke’s Bay has a relatively cool climate compared with other Syrah growing sites around the world, and this means that aromatic intensity is retained while the fruit gains in ripe intensity.

For a long time the wines made in Hawke’s Bay from Syrah have been a bit of a wine-insider’s secret. Prominent wine scribes, the wine trade and wine train spotters have been whispering about it for a while now.

As is our M.O., we hand-picked and fermented all as whole bunches. Periodic foot stomping released the juice slowly for a long ferment and an extended maceration period. After draining and basket pressing the wine was then matured in a concrete egg shaped tank for ten months. Then the wine was racked to some used oak puncheons for a further four months. We didn’t fine the wine, but we did filter this one.

Hot tar, liquorice, blackest cherry and cracked pepper are all characters that spring to mind when spending some time with a large glass of this. The palate has immense depth. The tannins almost feel like crushed stone. But there is also a plump core of ripe dark fruits allied to a spicy finish. We don’t think there is another Syrah out there like this.
